The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a licensed professional responsible for providing direct patient care in the perioperative setting. This role requires functioning as a first assistant to the surgeon, utilizing an expanded skill set acquired through organized training and supervised practice.
Position Overview
The RNFA operates under the supervision of the surgeon in both the Operating Room and Labor and Delivery Suite. The primary function is to assist the surgeon during procedures, ensuring the highest standards of care are maintained throughout the perioperative process.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the surgical team during procedures by performing first assistant duties.
- Utilize critical thinking skills to anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
- Provide direct care and support to patients before, during, and after surgical procedures.
- Maintain a sterile field and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a relevant nursing role.
- Current licensure with the California Board of Registered Nursing.
- Certification as a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA).
- Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certification.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS/BCLS) certification.
- Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) recognition.
Additional Requirements
Candidates must be prepared to undergo a credentialing process as required, which may take 6-8 weeks. Availability for alternating weekends and participation in holiday coverage is expected.
