Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA)

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse First Assistant collaborates with the surgical team to provide assistance during surgical procedures, ensuring patient safety and the achievement of optimal surgical outcomes under the supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policies.

Essential Job Duties

• Assist the surgical team in preparing and organizing sterile supplies, instruments, equipment, and drapes for surgical procedures.
• Help position the patient appropriately to ensure a safe surgical experience.
• Contribute to providing visualization and employ appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis.
• Utilize effective visualization of the operative site.
• Assist with the closure of body planes using suitable techniques.
• Apply appropriate wound dressings post-procedure.
• Assist in inserting and securing drainage systems to tissue.
• Safely operate surgical equipment and supplies, such as pneumatic tourniquets, electrocautery, and endoscopy equipment.
• Perform additional duties as requested.

Required Qualifications

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Wisconsin.
• Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
• Successful completion of an accredited RN First Assistant (RNFA) program or other recognized first-assisting education program.
• BLS certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
• Preferred: 1 or more years of relevant operating room/surgical experience.
• Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail are required.

Shift Information

Monday through Thursday from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Call required one weekend per month, in addition to seven nights of call during the month. Holiday coverage is also required.

Minimum Years of Experience

Less than 1 year of related experience is acceptable.

Certifications / Requirements

• BLS/BCLS certification is required.
• RNFA certification is also required.
