Job Description

Work Schedule: Mon - Fri, 8am-4:30 pm + On Call every 3rd week
Location: Medical Center 22 S Greene St, Baltimore, MD 21201

Under supervision of the Senior MCS Engineer provides support to the clinical MC Steam within UMMC. Provides technical and operational support to manage the implantation and post implantation monitoring of MCS. Works under the administration of the Senior MCS Engineer with direction by the Chief of Perfusion Services and the Medical & Surgical Directors of the MCS Program..

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

Provides Clinical & Technical Support: Responsible for assistance during clinical use, implantation, explantaiton/replacement and maintenance of MCS utilized.

Provides logistical & technical support for MCS implants, explants, and invasive procedures. Supervises operation of the MCS for the duration of any of these procedures. Performs tasks without additional technical assistance.
Provides on-call technical troubleshooting for inpatients and outpatients on MCS under the direction of MCS-trained physicians and the senior MCS Engineer. On-call responsibilities include being present for MCS equipment emergencies, implants, explants, and invasive procedures, as well as daily clinical rounds when necessary.
Participates in daily clinical rounds & multidisciplinary meetings to assist providers with managing MCS.

Systems Management: May assists with the formulation of policies and procedures relating to managing devices from purchasing through implantation.
New Technology Consultation: Develop and maintain current access to expert knowledge of evolving and emerging medical technologies and provide consultation to clinicians and leadership.

May assist with the forecasts and recommends emergent technologies for consideration by UMMC leadership consistent with the institution’s mission, vision, and business objectives.
May assist in evaluating proposals and reports on financial, technical and health care merit/qualities. Reports information and related benefits to leadership and hospital personnel.
Participates in the recommendation and implementation of medical technology systems, processes and improvements.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or other Engineering discipline with relevant coursework and clinical experience required. Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering preferred.
Prior experience with clinical MCS is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of relevant regulatory clinical and technical standards (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS) is required.
Familiarity with statistical analysis and database software is required.
Familiarity with basic anatomy and physiology as applied to the use and operation of equipment.
Ability to apply fundamental mathematical principles and formulas.
Highly effective written and verbal communication skills are required to work with management, clinical staff and external vendors. Ability to read complex technical equipment operation manuals and clinical literature.

Patient Safety

Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.

Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety
Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge
