Registered Nurse First Assistant

Position Summary:

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) assists surgeons during surgical procedures by providing critical support that ensures safety and optimal patient outcomes. This role includes responsibilities related to exposure, hemostasis, and closure, all conducted under the supervision of the surgeon and in compliance with hospital policies.

Essential Job Duties:

• Prepare and organize sterile supplies, instruments, equipment, and drapes for surgical procedures.
• Assist with patient positioning for surgical procedures to ensure a safe experience.
• Provide visualization and utilize appropriate techniques to maintain hemostasis.
• Utilize proper visualization techniques for the operative site.
• Assist in the closure of body planes using suitable techniques.
• Apply appropriate wound dressings following surgical procedures.
• Insert and secure drainage systems as necessary.
• Safely operate surgical equipment and supplies, such as pneumatic tourniquets, electrocautery, and endoscopy equipment.
• Perform additional duties as requested.

Required Qualifications:

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Wisconsin.
• Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
• Completion of an accredited RN First Assistant (RNFA) program or other recognized first-assisting education program.
• BLS certification within six months of hire.
• 1+ years of related operating room or surgical experience preferred.
• Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail required.

Shift Information:

Monday through Thursday, 7am to 5:30pm. Call required one weekend per month, with an additional seven nights of call during the month.

Holiday Coverage:

Holiday coverage is required.

Minimum Years of Experience:

Less than 1 year.

Certifications / Requirements:

• BLS/BCLS certification.
• RNFA qualification.
