Job Description
General Summary
Under the general supervision of respiratory care leadership and pulmonary diagnostics medical direction, supervises and monitors the daily work activities of pulmonary diagnostics staff when engaged in delivery of pulmonary diagnostic procedures regardless of location which includes Respiratory Care Practitioners, Nurses and Operating Room personnel who perform minor to highly complex pulmonary diagnostic procedures. Role responsibilities will include work between the pulmonary function lab, bronchoscopy procedural suites and perioperative services across both DTC and MTC UMMC locations.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
Supervises directly and indirectly the daily work activities of pulmonary diagnostic staff and inter-professional students in accordance with departmental and UMMC personnel policies and procedures.
Serves as a resource for all pulmonary diagnostic procedures performed in procedural space and operating room settings.
Participates in training and orientation of pulmonary diagnostic and operating room staff. Works collaboratively with physician & Perioperative Nursing leadership for required training and education to support new procedures, clinical trials and approved studies.
Participates in training and orientation of trainees (residents and fellows) rotating on pulmonary diagnostic services, in particular, help the trainees understand and establish safe procedural practices.
Coordinates and assigns patient care duties and provides instruction and direction to pulmonary diagnostic staff. Assists in the review of information for each posted case to assure appropriate preparation is complete in advance of case being performed. Communicate any gaps in required information with either scheduling personnel or the physician performing the case.
Evaluates the clinical performance during pulmonary diagnostic procedures of assigned pulmonary diagnostic staff, completes employee performance reviews and manages any behavioral standards violations in accordance with Just Culture and hospital policy. Recommends staff promotions through professional advancement models as appropriate and in consultation with appropriate leadership aligned with the staff member.
Determines daily staffing needs and schedules assigned staff accordingly. Assist in the interview and hiring of new staff.
Performs all aspects of respiratory care and minor to complex pulmonary diagnostics procedures as needed.
Recognizes patient cardio-pulmonary difficulties such as, carbon dioxide retention, pulmonary edema, pneumothorax, atelectasis, emphysema, acid base blood gas imbalance, and notifies the responsible physician.
Performs arterial punctures and interpretation of blood gas results for appropriate treatment of the patient.
Coordinates the safe handling and processing of all lab samples and other samples required for diagnostic evaluation.
Suggests quality assurance topics, reviews and evaluates pulmonary diagnostics techniques and suggests alternative methods that may improve workflow and procedural efficiency. Reviews and instructs pulmonary diagnostic staff in all therapeutic techniques and utilization of associated equipment. Assures a continued state of The Joint Commission readiness.
Reviews documentation per patient, such as, patient charges, documentation of procedures, assuring that requirements are met, are timely and accurate.
Assists with the compilation of resource and staffing utilization statistics, patient care volume statistics, equipment usage and other required data, for ongoing utilization review.
Oversees the environment of care and all required standards in the provision of care.
Identifies, evaluates, and recommends solutions or actions for resolution of problems.
Collaborates with respiratory care, Perioperative Nursing leadership and medical directors in communicating, updating and developing new departmental policies.
Seeks support for any pertinent changes that may affect operations, such as staffing patterns, special patient requirements, physician requests, equipment utilization and availability.
Ensures that the care, maintenance and storage of department equipment and supplies are in accordance with departmental procedures and protocols. Is the first line of contact by Biomed services for all associated equipment maintenance, repair and replacement.
Calibrates and assures proper functioning of equipment. Reports equipment malfunctions to respiratory care leadership and/or appropriate Biomedical Engineering staff.
In collaboration with the Physician IP team and leadership evaluates the need for additional clinical equipment and offers recommendations..
Attends meetings and in-services that are program specific for areas of supervision. i.e., pulmonary diagnostics, perioperative service, and those promoting leadership growth and development. Reports pertinent information, data, and discussion topics to staff, Respiratory Care leadership and medical direction.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
1. Associate degree is required. Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy is preferred. Registration by the National Board of Respiratory Care as a Respiratory Therapist is required. Licensure as a Respiratory Care practitioner by the Maryland Board of Physician Quality Assurance is required. CPR certification is required. One or more NBRC advanced credential is required (ACCS, NPS or RPFT) within 1 year of appointment. Continuous ACLS certification is require
Four years progressively responsible professional experience as a Respiratory Therapist is required. Experience in a lead/supervisory role or other comparable demonstrated leadership qualities are preferred.
Experience in advanced pulmonary diagnostics procedures is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Self-motivated and highly energetic individual with ability to encourage the same in the pulmonary diagnostics team. Ability to thrive in a team environment where collaboration and cooperation are well understood in the provision of the most efficient patient care possible.
Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary to work with pulmonary diagnostics staff, patients, and various hospital supervisory and clinical staff, as well as outside vendors and other support services.
Ability to supervise, monitor daily work activities, evaluate, train and motivate performance of subordinate technical, professional and clerical support staff.
Be open-minded to expanding role requirements and lead in the need to redesign workflows to meet changing needs.
Competence in adult and pediatric clinical areas is preferred. Additional training may be required to meet expanding procedural requirements.
Proficient knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system is required. Relevant knowledge of biology, microbiology, technical mathematics, and pharmacology is required. Proficient knowledge of medical terminology, operation and use of standard respiratory equipment and supplies, such as, various types of ventilators, nebulizers, aerosol masks, nasal cannulas, mist tents, oxyhoods and other oxygen delivery devices.
Proficient knowledge of respiratory diseases and standard treatments in order to assist in training employees. Knowledge of respiratory procedures such as auscultation, administration of bronchodilators, respiratory surgical procedures, x-ray and arterial blood gas interpretations and lab result analysis.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and associated software applications.
