Job Description

I. General Summary

Under limited supervision; transports patients, specimens, and equipment to and from various locations in accordance with Medical Center and department policies and procedures. Ensures the safe, timely and efficient transport of patients, specimens, and equipment throughout the Medical Center. Contributes to the smooth operational flow of the department, and promotes a positive image of the department and the Medical Center. Fulfillment of the job duties requires the employee to have access to medication storage areas.

II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

1. Transports patients to and from various locations within the Medical Center in a safe and efficient manner as directed.

A. Assists nursing or ancillary personnel as necessary to prepare patients for transport

B. Ensuring the patient is transported in the appropriate equipment using methods outlined within department policies and procedures.

C. Ensures the safety of patients during and after transports by inspecting equipment before use, making sure side rails are in the up position and locked at all times, ensuring that the patient is properly positioned in the transport vehicle, brakes are locked when stationary, beds and stretchers are placed in the lowest position, patients are dropped off in the designated drop off points, and someone is notified of the patients arrival before leaving the patient.

D. Uses proper body mechanics when transferring, moving, lifting and transporting patients.

III. Education and Experience

1. High School Diploma or GED required; or the completion of the certification program through Baltimore City Public School Systems in conjunction with Project Search internship will substitute for this requirement.

2. One year experience in a health care environment or in a customer service oriented field is preferred.

3. One year experience as a Patient Transportation Aide is preferred.

IV. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. BLS certification is required for ability to apply CPR for emergency patient care.

2. Demonstrated ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction. Basic understanding of and ability to converse effectively using the English language to communicate with nursing and other allied health personnel in the process of transporting patients and specimens, reading work schedules and logging daily work assignments.

4. Ability to meet competency requirements for patient safety, hazard prevention, body mechanics and transfers, and the departmental policy and procedure assessment. Ability and need to enter isolation rooms and environments (Fit testing required).

5. Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Ability to assess the patient’s age-specific needs and provide the care required as described in departmental procedure. Ability to operate a telephone, and computer.

V. Patient Safety

Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.

1. Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.

2. Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.

3. Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
